August Book Haul! | 2020

Hello! I hope you’re all having an amazing week! Today we are here to do the shameful task of looking at the enormous number of books I acquired in August. Seriously, it was bad. I don’t know how it happened  but a book fair with cheap books certainly didn’t help. Let’s dive right in!

BOUGHT

The Many Lives & Secret Sorrows of Joséphine B
by Sandra Gulland

70289

This is a slightly random purchase from the book fair but I think it will be interesting! I don’t know anything about Napoleon so I’m excited to read this – I actually picked up the whole trilogy and it looks cute!

Witch Wraith
by Terry Brooks

21007685

This is the third book in The Dark Legacy of Shannara series – I’m yet to read the second one, but I loved the first. I found this at the book fair too and in the right edition so I had to get it!

The Last Migration
by Charlotte McConaghy

53342266. sy475

I saw this book in the Melbourne Writer’s Festival and I think it sounds really interesting. When I saw it in the bookstore I decided to get myself a copy! I hope it’s as good as I’m expecting it to be.

Carve the Mark
by Veronica Roth

30233110. sy475

Again, something from the book fair. I’d been torn about reading this for the longest time so when I saw it at the fair I decided to get myself a copy. I’m really hoping that I enjoy this but I know there was some controversy around this when it was first released.

American War
Omar el Akkad

32283423. sy475

This is a dystopian novel that I think sounds super interesting. Set in the future in America on the brink of a second civil war – who wouldn’t want to read that?!

The Thirteenth Tale
by Diane Setterfield

2181571. sy475

I have actually already read this but I’ve never owned a copy. So when I saw a copy of it at the book fair I just had to get one! I’ve been meaning to do so for the longest of times. This is actually one of my all-time favourite books: it’s such a great mystery/thriller.

The Mark of Fallen Flame
by Brittany Matsen

43725578. sy475

This came in the July edition of the No Shelf Control Book Box (along with its prequel). Matsen is an indie author and I think the story sounds like it’ll be a good one. I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews for this already.

Women and Leadership
by Julia Gillard & Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

54360378. sy475

I was inspired to get a copy of this after I watched Gillard speak at the Melbourne Writer’s Festival about the book. This book has been created with the help of numerous women who have all held important positions of power and it discusses the issues of sexism in the 21st century. I think it’ll be well-worth the read!

Sex and Vanity
Kevin Kwan

52070924. sy475

I am currently reading this one! This is another book that I found through the Melbourne Writer’s Festival and I thought it sounded so good and interesting (I was right). Kwan is the author of Crazy Rich Asians!

Replica
by Lauren Oliver

28448287

This is another book I’ve been contemplating buying for the longest of times. I’m a big fan of Oliver’s stories but I hate how she leaves every book open-ended. But of course, when I saw this at the book fair I couldn’t pass up getting a copy for so cheap.

Dorothy Must Die
by Danielle Paige

20483113

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get a copy of this book! I always walk past it in bookstores and think, oh I must pick that up one day. Especially as it’s a retelling and I love those! So again, I saw this at the book fair and finally got my copy!

The Girl on the Train
by Paula Hawkins

22557272

This is another one from the fair that I found (in hardback too!) which I’ve read but never owned. I loved this story – it was so gripping and high stakes so I’m really excited to finally have my own copy.

Vengeance Blooms
by Chloe Hodge

52183026. sx318 sy475

I saw this duology (second book below) on Instagram because one of my friends there wrote it! I had no idea! I’ve got the prettiest hardback editions (different covers to these) and I seriously love them. I’ve heard nothing but good reviews so I can’t wait to pick these ones up.

Retribution Dies
by Chloe Hodge

54547705. sy475

This is the sequel to Vengeance Blooms.

RECEIVED

Kingdom of Sea and Stone
by Mara Rutherford

48713842

This is the sequel to Crown of Coral and Pearl which I read earlier this year and LOVED. I was surprised to see Harlequin offering the sequel for review over on NetGalley and new I had to request it! This comes out October 7th and I can’t wait to read it.

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars
by Christopher Paolini

51781054. sy475

A massive – MASSIVE – thank you to Pan Macmillan for sending me a review copy of this. This is available from the 15th September and I cannot wait to read it. I will be making my way through this beast of a book (it’s nearly 900 pages) in October and I cannot wait. Paolini is the author of Eragon and I’m so excited that this is a sci-fi!

That’s a wrap!

Have you read any of these? What did you think?

Happy reading!
