Surely I can’t be alone. There are just some books that I want to WANT to read, but I just don’t ever have the motivation. There are quite a few of these. I feel so bad. But alas, here we are. Finally facing the music. Today, we’re going to confess about five (instead of ten, yes) books I’m putting off reading.
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and this week’s prompt is:
Freebie!!
But ew I never put in so much effort as to actually come up with my own prompt so I found an old prompt: books you’re putting off reading and why. Because I thought that sounded interesting! Let’s get into it!
1. The God of Small Things
by Arundhati Roy
This seemed a really fitting pick because I’ve actually got this slated for my TBR for August. If you’re not aware, I do monthly TBR jar picks over on my YouTube channel and this got pulled out of the jar this month!! But I think this is going to be drier fiction than I’m used to and the thought of how slowly I might progress through it has me terrified, even though it sounds amazing.
2. Tigana
by Guy Gavriel Kay
This book is nearly 800 pages long and it looks even longer than that. Ain’t nobody got time for long books (that is 100% a lie but nonetheless). This is one of the books on my TBR that intimidates me the most!
3. The Wise Man’s Fear
by Patrick Rothfuss
Amazingly, the reason I haven’t read this yet ISN’T because of its size. It’s because Rothfuss still hasn’t finished writing the third book. We’re past the ten year anniversary of book one already! I don’t want to commit to reading this when I know I can’t finish the story.
4. Vanity Fair
by William Makepeace Thackeray
If there’s one thing that intimidates me more than a classic, it’s a near-900 page classic. I so want to read this book but IT IS SO BIG. Surely this will take me at least 148 years to read because of the sheer size of it. Thus I cannot bring myself to start.
5. Go Set a Watchman
by Harper Lee
THIS BOOK. I was so excited to read it because I actually love To Kill a Mockingbird. But when this was released people hated it!! I don’t know what this is supposed to be about, and I don’t know what people were expecting. But the sheer tidal waves of disappointment that followed its release really put me off reading it!
That’s a wrap!
What book have you been putting off?
The wise man’s fear is so good though.. But I can totally see why you’re waiting haha!

Haha I know I’m going to love it! But I also know I’ll forget what happened by the time book 3 is here 😂😂

I’m definitely planning on rereading before the third one comes haha

I’ve been putting off the Name of the Wind both because of its length and the fact that the third book is nowhere in sight!😂😂

Right!? So frustrating but alas!

I’m reading The Wise Man’s Fear as soon as Rothfuss is done with the third book. I’m sure I’m gonna love it.

Yesss! I’ll be rereading book one too 😂 it’ll be the best binge ever

I haven’t started Rothfuss books yet because I am waiting until he actually publishes book 3 haha.

Loved Vanity Fair at uni, if I remember correctly they’re managable chapters. Go Set A Watchman was dreadful – avoid forever

That’s great to hear about Vanity Fair!! And oh dear 😂😂

I’ve had The God of Small things on my goodreads TBR shelf for about 10 years? I’m sure one day I will read it. Sure.

Hahah it’s been on mine for a stupid number of years too 😂😂 maybe I’ll actually read it next month and then we’ll see if it’s worth it 🤔

Great list! I love To Kill a Mockingbird and I was so excited for Go Set a Watchman, but I ultimately ended up giving my copy to a charity shop before I read it when some of the controversy around how the book was published came to light. I don’t think Harper Lee ever intended to let this original draft of TKaM see the light, and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth that her publisher had potentially taken advantage of her advanced age to get it published.

Thanks! Yeah that’s such a worry isn’t it!?

Okay, but you should totally read The Wise Man’s Fear despite no news of a sequel yet.

I love this idea! There are surely a lot of books on my tbr that I’m avoiding too! I think I’m gonna make a post about this as well in the future, if you don’t mind? (I’ll be sure to credit you for the idea.)
On my list would definitely be “The name of the wind” because it intimidates the heck out of me.

Oh absolutely go for it – this isn’t my idea, it’s an old prompt from Top Ten Tuesday so you can credit that! 😁😁 Haha it’s such a longggg book but so damn good!

I definitely get the Rothfuss one, I’ve never read that series, but I’ve been putting off the second book in Victoria Schwab’s The Archived series for the same reason, the series was discontinued by the publisher and though she has said she’d like to finish it at some point, it seems like it might be a while!

It’s so frustrating when that happens!! Discontinued series are the worst 😭😭😭

Yeah they are, though it’s not usually the author’s fault 🙂

Wow, Tigana is long. I’d avoid it just based on that alone. I don’t have a great track record with finishing super long books. LOL.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

Haha, I’ve written a post about this exact topic. There are tons of chunky classics that I want to read, but I’m not motivated to actually do it.

haha right?! Classics are just so intimidating to pick up. I used to set myself yearly challenges to read ONE and still wouldn’t do it!

Big classics are definitely something I’m avoiding! And I’m talking Emma and Tess Of The D’Urbervilles, not Les Miserables. They’re not even THAT big.

Oh absolutely, I feel like just the fact that they’re classics is a perfectly valid reason to be scared off by them XD

I’ve been putting off reading THE ILLUMINAE FILES- I actually started listening to the audio right at the beginning of covid, but then it turned out part of the plot was pandemic related and I just- couldn’t. Maybe someday, but not now! Happy reading! 🙂
My Top Ten Tuesday!
