Books I’m Avoiding Reading | Top Ten Tuesday

Surely I can’t be alone. There are just some books that I want to WANT to read, but I just don’t ever have the motivation. There are quite a few of these. I feel so bad. But alas, here we are. Finally facing the music. Today, we’re going to confess about five (instead of ten, yes) books I’m putting off reading.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and this week’s prompt is:

Freebie!!

But ew I never put in so much effort as to actually come up with my own prompt so I found an old prompt: books you’re putting off reading and why. Because I thought that sounded interesting! Let’s get into it!

1. The God of Small Things
by Arundhati Roy

117661

This seemed a really fitting pick because I’ve actually got this slated for my TBR for August. If you’re not aware, I do monthly TBR jar picks over on my YouTube channel and this got pulled out of the jar this month!! But I think this is going to be drier fiction than I’m used to and the thought of how slowly I might progress through it has me terrified, even though it sounds amazing.

2. Tigana
by Guy Gavriel Kay

7858391

This book is nearly 800 pages long and it looks even longer than that. Ain’t nobody got time for long books (that is 100% a lie but nonetheless). This is one of the books on my TBR that intimidates me the most!

3. The Wise Man’s Fear
by Patrick Rothfuss

13558465

Amazingly, the reason I haven’t read this yet ISN’T because of its size. It’s because Rothfuss still hasn’t finished writing the third book. We’re past the ten year anniversary of book one already! I don’t want to commit to reading this when I know I can’t finish the story.

4. Vanity Fair
by William Makepeace Thackeray

5797

If there’s one thing that intimidates me more than a classic, it’s a near-900 page classic. I so want to read this book but IT IS SO BIG. Surely this will take me at least 148 years to read because of the sheer size of it. Thus I cannot bring myself to start.

5. Go Set a Watchman
by Harper Lee

26889280. sy475

THIS BOOK. I was so excited to read it because I actually love To Kill a Mockingbird. But when this was released people hated it!! I don’t know what this is supposed to be about, and I don’t know what people were expecting. But the sheer tidal waves of disappointment that followed its release really put me off reading it!

That’s a wrap!

What book have you been putting off?

Happy reading!

  1. Great list! I love To Kill a Mockingbird and I was so excited for Go Set a Watchman, but I ultimately ended up giving my copy to a charity shop before I read it when some of the controversy around how the book was published came to light. I don’t think Harper Lee ever intended to let this original draft of TKaM see the light, and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth that her publisher had potentially taken advantage of her advanced age to get it published.

  2. I love this idea! There are surely a lot of books on my tbr that I’m avoiding too! I think I’m gonna make a post about this as well in the future, if you don’t mind? (I’ll be sure to credit you for the idea.)
On my list would definitely be “The name of the wind” because it intimidates the heck out of me.
