February Book Haul! | 2021

I am so late in getting this up for you! March has been a whirlwind of hectic-ness. BUT WE’RE HERE. It’s okay. I have many books to show you (naturally). February was ridiculous and I managed to accrue so many new books. My bookshelves are creaking with the weight of all the books I have lumped on them. Let us hope, for my TBR’s sanity, that I don’t acquire anywhere near as many books in march!

New Books

SPLINTERED | A. G. HOWARD

I am a big A. G. Howard fan, I’ve read a good majority of her books and they’re always exciting and unique. So I have actually read this one, I just didn’t own it. I managed to do a little book trade with a friend to get it and now I have the complete (and matching, yay!) series!

Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

THE IRON DAUGHTER & THE IRON QUEEN | JULIE KAGAWA

I did a solid shop at a second-hand bookstore in February and got quite a few goodies from there. These two were some of them. I own the old (original) covers for the Iron Fey series – AND, they’re all different heights. I’d seen these (books two and three) going at the second-hand store, so of course I got them to start upgrading my series to the new ones!

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE | TOMI ADEYEMI

I also found this at the second-hand store and was super excited about it. It’s in really good condition (and I’ve already read it) – but I didn’t own book one. I have a proof copy of book one with an incomplete cover. And now I have a matching set! Yay!

SLAMMED & POINT OF RETREAT | COLLEEN HOOVER

More goodies from the second-hand store! One of my reading goals for this year is to read as many Colleen Hoover books as I can. I’ve been struggling to get my library to stock some of her books so was thrilled to see books one and two in this series and, of course, snagged both of them for myself!

THE CLOCKMAKER’S DAUGHTER | KATE MORTON

This came in my February package for a small company called Read & Relax. They do blind dates with books (you can use my code BOOKSNAIL10 to save 10%) and I was so excited that this was what I got! I’ve seen this floating around and had thought it was something I might like. Cannot wait to see what it’s like to read!

My real name, no one remembers. The truth about that summer, no one else knows.

In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor on the banks of the Upper Thames. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared; a priceless heirloom is missing; and Edward Radcliffe’s life is in ruins.

Over one hundred and fifty years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items: a sepia photograph of an arresting-looking woman in Victorian clothing, and an artist’s sketchbook containing the drawing of a twin-gabled house on the bend of a river.

Why does Birchwood Manor feel so familiar to Elodie? And who is the beautiful woman in the photograph? Will she ever give up her secrets?

MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO SOMEONE | LORI GOTTLIEB

I actually saw someone talking about this on Instagram and it sounded so good that I just had to get a copy. I think the concept of the book is really intriguing and I think there will be so much useful insight within it as well. I’m really looking forward to getting into this.

Have compassion, have compassion, have compassion. I repeat my mantra, then refocus on John … and just then, something occurs to me: what John has been talking about sounds eerily familiar.

As a therapist, Lori knows a lot about pain, about the ways in which pain is tied to loss, and how change and loss travel together. She knows how affirming it feels to blame the outside world for her frustrations, to deny ownership of whatever role she might have in the existential play called My Incredibly Important Life. When a devastating event takes place in Lori’s life, she realises that, before being able to help her patients, she must first learn how to help herself.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is the story of an incredible relationship — between Lori, a therapist at a critical life juncture, and her own therapist, Wendell, a veteran therapist with an unconventional style. Through their sessions, Wendell teaches Lori how to become a better person and a better therapist, as she goes about the business of helping her own patients — the couple who are struggling after having a baby, the narcissist TV producer, the older woman who feels she has nothing to live for, the self-destructive alcoholic young woman, the terminally ill 35-year-old newlywed.

Taking place over one year, beginning with the devastating event that lands her in Wendell’s office, this is a rare and candid insight into a profession conventionally bound with rules and secrecy, told with charm and compassion, vulnerability and humour.

FIREHEART TIGER | ALIETTE DE BODARD

I had this one on pre-order so was thrilled when it turned up on my doorstep. I’m totally in love with the cover for this one and I’m really excited to see what the story is like inside. This is a tiny novella and I’m hoping there will be a glorious series to follow.

A HEAP O’ LIVING, THE PATH TO HOME, ALL THAT MATTERS | EDGAR A. GUEST

I then did something very out of character: I bought poetry. I bought three volumes of poetry to be exact. Believe it or not, I was watching someone read out poetry by Edgar A. Guest on TikTok and it resonated with me so much that I felt compelled to read more of his work.

STORMBRINGERS & FOOLS’ GOLD | PHILIPPA GREGORY

I found these two books in the second-hand store and it was not long after I’d finished book one (this is two and three). I was so excited to see them because I’d actually borrowed book one from the library – I’d wanted to start reading Philippa Gregory’s books – and they don’t have books two and three. What a win!

THE GILDED ONES | NAMINA FORNA

This was another pre-order that arrived in February. It’s fair to say this had so much hype in the lead-up to its release. But I don’t know if *I’ve* just not come across it, but there doesn’t seem to be much talk about it post-release. Either way, I’m still SUPER excited to tuck into this one as soon as I can!

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. THE TESTAMENTS | MARGARET ATWOOD

I’ve already read this one as well, so this haul doesn’t seem quite so scary as it might first appear. I didn’t own a copy of this and I’d really wanted to get the hardback (but it was just so expensive and it’s tricky convincing yourself to spend that much money on something you’ve already read). BUT THEN. One of my favourite little companies over on Instagram, Burn the Wick Candle Co., started doing sprayed edges on second-hand books. And they did this one! It has ombred navy/blue edges now! So nice!

When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her–freedom, prison or death.

With The Testaments, the wait is over.

Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story more than fifteen years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.

In this brilliant sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, acclaimed author Margaret Atwood answers the questions that have tantalized readers for decades.

WINTERKEEP | KRISTIN CASHORE

Another pre-order! And one of my most anticipated books of the year. I cannot wait to have a little bit more time to sink my teeth into this. It is QUITE the hefty book so I want to be able to be distraction-free when I read it. If you’re not aware, this is the fourth instalment to the Graceling Realm series, taking place some years after the events of books three.

Something is rotten in the heart of Winterkeep…

Four years after Bitterblue left off, a new land has been discovered to the east: Torla; and the closest nation to Monsea is Winterkeep. Winterkeep is a land of miracles, a democratic republic run by people who like each other, where people speak to telepathic sea creatures, adopt telepathic foxes as pets, and fly across the sky in ships attached to balloons.

But when Bitterblue’s envoys to Winterkeep drown under suspicious circumstances, she and Giddon and her half sister, Hava, set off to discover the truth–putting both Bitterblue’s life and Giddon’s heart to the test when Bitterbue is kidnapped. Giddon believes she has drowned, leaving him and Hava to solve the mystery of what’s wrong in Winterkeep.

Lovisa Cavenda is the teenage daughter of a powerful Scholar and Industrialist (the opposing governing parties) with a fire inside her that is always hungry, always just nearly about to make something happen. She is the key to everything, but only if she can figure out what’s going on before anyone else, and only if she’s willing to transcend the person she’s been all her life.

EMISSARY & GODDESS | FIONA MCINTOSH

You may or may not be aware of my new-found love for author Fiona McIntosh. Well, it is a love that burns strongly. I’ve been reading any of her books that come my way and I want to read them all. These are books two and three in the Pecheron series – book one I got many years ago and have regretted since not buying the full set so they’d match. Miraculously, I came across the second two books at the second-hand bookstore in the EXACT editions I wanted!

Captured by slave traders in the inhospitable desert, Lazar fought his way to freedom, earning the coveted position of Spur of Percheron. Charged with protecting his adopted city from enemies on both sides of its walls, he has led a charmed life as confidant to and protector of Zar Joreb for many years. But now Joreb is dead. . . .

Though Joreb’s well-intentioned fifteen-year-old heir, Boaz, will take the title of Zar, the balance of power lies in the hands of his beautiful and cruelly ambitious mother, a former harem slave who rose to power by the Zar’s favor. Aside from Lazar, whom Boaz trusts and respects, the young Zar’s only friend is Pez, the court jester, a misshapen dwarf whose tricks and diversions are accepted only because he is known to be mad.

When a stunning young girl is brought to the palace to fill a space in Boaz’s harem, both Boaz and Lazar are surprised by their unexpectedly strong reactions to her. But Ana, the odalisque, finds the closeted world of the harem stifling and unbearable. And unbeknownst to all, the gods themselves are beginning to rise in a cyclical battle that is just beginning, and will enmesh everyone in the palace in a struggle for the very soul of Percheron.

SISTERS OF THE WOLF | PATRICIA MILLER-SCHROEDER

This isn’t coming out until later this year but I was totally taken in by the cover and the topic. This is YA fantasy remaining the ice-age with teen protagonists. I’ve never read anything set in this era before – imagine or otherwise – and I think Ice Age (the movies) is probably the only exposure I’ve ever had of it. I don’t even know if we have recorded history from this time. Not that I’m expecting facts from this book, but I’m certainly expecting something unique!

Can Shinoni and Keena, two Ice Age teens separated from their tribes, overcome their differences to outwit their pursuer and survive the unforgiving wilds?

The climate is changing, game is disappearing, and two peoples of the Ice Age compete for survival in a savage world. Keena, from a powerful band of Neanderthals, and Shinoni, daughter of a Cro-Magnon shaman, are torn from their families by Haken, a ruthless hunter. The girls dislike each other but soon discover they need each other to survive. Together they escape but are pursued by Haken across an Ice-Age landscape rumbling with advancing glaciers and teeming with mighty predators.

As Shinoni and Keena work to overcome disaster at every turn, they are joined by Tewa, a powerful she-wolf, who becomes their guardian and spirit guide. Can their growing friendship overcome cultural, racial, and even species differences? Will they ever be able to find their families? Only the spirits know.

TEMPEST OF BRAVOURE: KINGDOM ASCENT | VALENA D’ANGELIS

This isn’t coming out for a few months yet, but I’m super keen to get into it. I found the cover so epic that I was drawn to read more about it. It screams EPIC FANTASY BATTLES THIS WAY. How could I not? There are four races in this books – including elves – and there is mage and conflict and basically everything you could have hoped would be in this.

NO GODS, NO MONSTERS | CADWELL TURNBULL

This isn’t coming out until the second half of the year but I’m so excited to read it. I thought the premise just sounded so fascinating, I couldn’t pass it up. It seems like a wonderful balance between topical subjects (police brutality) and fantasy.

One October morning, Laina gets the news that her brother was shot and killed by Boston cops. But what looks like a case of police brutality soon reveals something much stranger. Monsters are real. And they want everyone to know it.

As creatures from myth and legend come out of the shadows, seeking safety through visibility, their emergence sets off a chain of seemingly unrelated events. Members of a local werewolf pack are threatened into silence. A professor follows a missing friend’s trail of bread crumbs to a mysterious secret society. And a young boy with unique abilities seeks refuge in a pro-monster organization with secrets of its own. Meanwhile, more people start disappearing, suicides and hate crimes increase, and protests erupt globally, both for and against the monsters.

At the center is a mystery no one thinks to ask: Why now? What has frightened the monsters out of the dark?

The world will soon find out. .
