Revenge of the Fifth | Top Ten Tuesday

I think exactly none of us are surprised that once again I’m going rogue for this week’s topic. I hope you’re all having a fantastic start to your week! And don’t forget it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday (for those of you in the countries where it is, in fact, Mother’s Day on Sunday).

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and instead of this week’s prompt I’m doing:

Ten Five books that have a dark side

In celebration of it being the 5th of May and thus “Return of the Fifth” I thought I would theme today’s list with books that have a dark side to them. Whether this be a villain being the main character, a reference to dark forces/magic/sides or some other sinister suggestion! I am also only doing five books this week (I’m a little pushed for time and loathe to shorten this post but alas, I must). I hope you enjoy!

1. A Dress for the Wicked

In this story we have a reference to a disturbing and dark side to a competition. This follows a girl who is from the country who is the first country girl to enter into this famous sewing competition. I think it’s a little more complicated than just “sewing” but nonetheless. I can’t wait to find out what the dark side is!

2. The Beautiful

Ahdieh’s newest book features vampires and the underworld. It’s set in a scary Paris ruled by the dead and if all those things don’t mean there’s a dark side to this story then I don’t know what to say. This fits the brief perfectly with a dalliance over to the other side!

3. Wicked Like A Wildfire
by Lana Popović

A tale of two sisters, forbidden magic and family secrets is seasoned with a nice sprinkling of a haunted house. There most certainly is a dark side to this story that I can’t wait to explore and I’ve always felt that the cover for this book is deceptively happy.

4. Ninth House
by Leigh Bardugo

I am very sure that there is a dark side to this story but from the blurb, I’m not quite sure what it is. We have mention of the MC being the sole survivor of an unsolved multiple homicide, of occult activities at university and sinister and extraordinary things happening within secret societies.

5. Slayer

Here we have girls gifted with supernatural strength to fight the forces of darkness. That is a big ol’ tick for this brief. I love White’s books and her empowering way of writing so I’m sure this will be a wonderfully exciting brush with darkness, enemies and danger.

  10. I need to read the Buffy series… I’ve never seen the TV show but I do have a signed copy of the duology! Kiersten White is awesome.

    Right now I’m reading The Young Elites trilogy (and finishing a fanfic of the series from Magiano’s POV) and if Adelina isn’t a dark character, I don’t know who is!

    1. haha me neither! I just love White’s stuff and feel like we can definitely enjoy it without seeing the show. I’m super jealous that you have a signed copy!

      Oooh I haven’t read that series yet either but I’ve heard many good things!
