The Ten Kindest Characters || Top Ten Tuesday

Hello, hello! I’m deviating from the course today and semi-freestyling. I wasn’t inspired by today’s prompt for Top Ten Tuesday for whatever reason so I’ve done something on a different topic. So I hope you’re ready to explore the top ten characters (in my opinion) who warm the cockles of your heart and make you want to befriend them INSTANTLY.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and this week’s prompt is:

Bookish Items/Merchandise I’d Like to Own

so instead I’m doing:

Kind Characters

Because why not?! Actually the reason why is because today is world kindness day. So there. These characters are often side-characters that don’t get enough lovin’!  Thus, I’m going to splash around and make a fuss about them RIGHT NOW. Let’s go!

1. Rudy
(The Book Thief)

893136

Oh, how I love Rudy! He is the sweetest fictional boy who makes my heart sing. He’s so kind to Liesel when she first moves to town and his insistent friendship that he pushes upon her is gorgeous. The world needs more Rudys.

2. Sam Cortland
(The Assassin’s Blade)

18243700

I have only just finished re-reading this and am currently still in shock over the fate of Sam in that book. But isn’t he the SWEETEST?! Despite Celaean’s brusque nature and downright mean words to him all the time, he still finds it in his heart to love her. This man never gives up on her. AGH. I love him.

3. Ren
(Tiger’s Curse)

Ren is the key to my heart, I swear it. Could there ever be a more gentlemanly gentleman than this fair flower? No, I think not. The way he treats Kelsey throughout the series is heart-warming, to say the least. This is a man who will always put you first and make you feel like a princess. *swoon*

4. Neville Longbottom
(Harry Potter)

72193

A classic, am I right? Neville doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. I swear, it’s fairly impossible to not love the sweetness that is Neville. I love his loyalty to Harry and his unwavering support. I wish I was Neville.

5. Camellia
(The Belles)

23197837

One of my favourite things about this book is how serious the undertones of it are but how light-hearted and whimsical our MC remains for so much of it. Camellia is a delightful character who only wants the best for everyone else. Her kindness practically seeps through her pores.

6. Radu
(And I Darken)

25324111

Honestly, Radu probably should’ve been first on my list – if I were ranking this in order. I love how he is portrayed as the useless underdog for so much of the story but is always determined to prove everyone wrong. He’s a beautiful example of showing how much further kind words and being nice can get you than a sword.

7. Yumeko
(Shadow of the Fox)

42108055

Yumeko is a gentle and innocent soul who deserves the world. By having her travel with Tatsumi, a hardened warrior of death, it only highlights how wonderful Yumeko is and how fabulous the world is through her eyes. It is literally impossible to hate this character – I need some merch relating to her!

8. Rives
(Nil)

21469139

Rives is such an unsung hero of this series (which everyone needs to hurry up and read because holy wow it’s fantastic). He gets the main role in the second book which is very satisfying. But he’s just one of those people that’s loyal to you right until the end.

9. Percy
(The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue)

29283884

THE CUTEST OF THEM ALL. I’m such a Percy fan, it’s not even funny. Once again, Percy is a character set off shining against the roughness and idiocy of Monty. He is a rare type to find in the real world and a wonderful character on the page. There’s nothing not to like about Percy.

10. Simon Snow
(Carry On)

28356624

Written to be likeable, Simon makes this books a real hoot. I love this story so much, especially with the contrast between Simon and Baz. It’s hilarious and wonderful and you can never get enough of it.

That’s a wrap!

Which kind character do you love the most?

  1. Thank you for celebrating kind characters! Although I enjoy reading about lovably flawed people, I struggle when a book is populated by obnoxious scoundrels. If I’m to devote my free time to reading about imaginary people, I want them to be people I enjoy spending time with.

You’re right that often these kind characters are secondary, supporting characters, but here’s an exception: Chief Inspector Armand Gamache in the Three Pines village mystery novels by Louise Penny. He’s principled, humane, and although as a homicide detective, he witnesses the worst in humanity, he’s stayed true to the notion that on balance, there’s more good than evil in the human species.

    1. It was such a fun post to write and go exploring for all these goodies 😁 and you’re certainly right that it’s nice to be reminded of all the good hearted people out there. Thanks for your recommendation!
