Waiting on Wednesday [#30]

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over @ Breaking the Spine and each week we get to pick an up-and-coming release that we’re excited about. I always look forwards to this because it gives me an excuse to scroll through the never ending lists on Goodreads of books that are coming out. AND IT IS FUN MY FRIENDS. Lists are the 3rd most satisfying thing in life (after sniffing books and free chocolate).

This week I’m waiting on . . .

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland — the infamous Queen of Hearts — she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the yet-unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend and supply the Kingdom of Hearts with delectable pastries and confections. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen.
At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king’s marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship.
Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

I’m really keen for this one to come out for exactly two reasons:

  1. It’s written by Marissa Meyer.
  2. It’s an Alice in Wonderland retelling.

I am SUCH an Alice in Wonderland retelling addict – I will read pretty much any spin-off that anyone puts out because I just find them to be so much fun. My favourite take is, of course, A. G. Howard’s Splintered series – and it will probably always be a favourite.

But Meyer is a pretty huge author at the moment. Still on her Lunar Chronicles high, I think we can expect pretty huge things from this book. I must say I was a little disappointed with the cover when it was revealed . . . there’s not a lot to it. I was hoping it would be more fantastical and crazy and really have a wow factor. But it’s just black with red squiggles. Ah well, can’t have everything.

The blurb for this absolutely blows me away. I love that it’s about a young Queen of Hearts and I LOVE that it’s a bit of a love triangle with her having a secret courtship with the court jester. SIGN ME UP. I really don’t see how you could go wrong with this one.
