The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman | book review

【 THE BLACKTONGUE THIEF 】

book #1 of the Blacktongue series

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Genre: Fantasy (epic)

This was genuinely awesome. I loved every minute and I really loved the full-blown Irish sass of the main character, Kinch.

I listened to the audiobook production and I can tell you it was well worth it – if you have access to the audiobook, do listen because the accents and narration take this to another level. It’s set in an epic fantasy world that has suffered from political wars across several kingdoms. There’s a governing body (of sorts) called the Guild that Kinch defers to because of his occupation, shall we say, as a thief.

The whole plot is driven by his need to either avoid or pay off his education debt to the Guild and oh boy, does it get him into endless trouble or what.

This is very much so a book for those who love stories that are hilarious, deadly serious and take you on a long quest with a rag-tag band of characters who are trying to find salvation.

Can’t recommend enough.

Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path.

But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark.

Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.

Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva’s. Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.
