This series is so much fun! Book four had the most ‘filler’ vibe so far out of all of them, but it’s set everything up really excitingly for the fifth and final book.

Things are a bit slower but way, way more complicated in this instalment. The characters progress from their epic development arcs in book 3, to really stewing & solidying their new complexities and complications throughout book 4.

The plot feels expansive in this one, with a big cast of characters (and reader, brace your heart, for Kova is ready to pummel it in this one) and politics that resembles the knotted ball of yarn that lives in my cupboard from an attempt at knitting many years ago. Wowzer, where to start unravelling that (glorious and intentional) mess!

My feelings and ethics were tried and tested in this book, too. I’m left unsure (but also 100% sure) about how I feel about Aldrick (in love (but also, tsk, he’s a lil’ toxic?)) and a few others. I also enjoyed the way Daniel plays a wildly inconsistently present role (man, just me or did he disappear at the end? Hilariously, makes me feel like he got too hard to write into the plot and was conveniently forgotten). ANYWAY, pesky minor things aside, this is fun.

Cannot wait to be mortally wounded (in the feels) by book 5.

The Air Awakens series, a young adult epic fantasy filled with elemental magic and slow burn romance, continues in Water’s Wrath.
