Mysterious Labyrinths in Piranesi | Book Review

【 PIRANESI 】

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Evocative and calmly thrilling.

Genre: Fantasy
Author: Susanna Clarke
Published: September 2020
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Pages: 245 (hardback)

I don’t know what it is about this book, but the imagery cast in my mind is stunning – and I desperately want to see someone bring this to life on screen. I loved the character of Piranesi and read this in one sitting as I just had to know the truth behind the House.

Slowly piecing together what is going on is exciting and has you predicting all sorts of outcomes as to who Piranesi is and what the Other is up to. The innocent attitude of Piranesi is sweet and loveable – and the way he reveres the House and respects the dead was so cute.

There was an illusive nature to the personality of the book, with the rhythms of the tides coming in and out, the endless nature of the Halls and the characterisation of unexpected things. It drew me in so thoroughly and made me want to follow Piranesi around this structure of wonders to see it all with my own eyes. It feels poetic in its own right, but really it’s just a deep fascination with what the heck is going on and being thoroughly delighted by the story waiting for you.

This book is awesome going into it knowing very little about it. It’s something that will take you on its own adventure that you will either love or hate (but going by reviews, I’m guessing you’re going to love it). Not to mention the hardback is just stunning and worth having on your shelves.

  1. I loved Piranesi! I read it last year and already want to reread it.
Totally agree with you both on knowing very little going in making it a better experience and how gorgeous the hardcover is.
