I’m in two minds on how I feel about the audiobooks for this series – having read book one and then listened to book two, I think I might revert to reading when it comes to book three, but we shall see. The narration slowly grew on me, but even when I was unsure, the epic scale of the plot still wowed me.

I am really loving this story and the sheer vastness of the world and its characters. Things took such interesting turns in A Clash of Kings, and (somehow) I’ve avoided spoilers from the TV series, so I really don’t know where things will go next. My favourite story line is Arya’s, but the story I’m most anticipating to see if things turn out okay or not for the character, is Sansa.

Theon’s perspective was a really interesting one in this book, too. He’s such a pitiful, loathsome brat – which makes it so fun to read his POV. There’s a part of you that wants him to succeed in proving his worth to his father, but a greater part of me just doesn’t care at all if he lives or dies, which makes me even more excited for his chapters because I couldn’t guess which way Martin is going to treat him in the story.

My favourite character in the series so far has been Tyrion, which surprised me. He so clearly feels like the bad guy you’re supposed to hate, but there’s just something about him that has me absolutely loving his chapters and barracking for him. I don’t want him to prevail over the Starks, but I’ll be so damn sad if Tyrion does get killed off! Nothing makes for a good book like a morally grey, love-to-hate bad guy, right?

I’m looking forward to continuing the series (and very motivated to soldier on through the remaining books without such a long wait between reading them!) so that I can finally be in the know for the Game of Thrones overall story.

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. Two great leaders—Lord Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon—who hold sway over an age of enforced peace are dead, victims of royal treachery. Now, from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel…and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.
