This was also not what I was expecting, but I think it was a lot better – if also a lot more uncomfortable. I listened to this via audiobook, and the narration was top-notch. Can recommend.

But wow, this was so dark. I was expecting this to be full-on cosy crime humour, but this has a close-to-home, hard-hitting angle to the murdery storyline. What Katy Brent has done with this book is shocking and fascinating. This book contains all the fury and despair of what it’s like to be a woman ever fearful of male sexual predators.

It really punches you in the gut, as a woman reader, when you feel the rush of relatability (to the lack of safety when surrounded by predatory men, not the murder, I hope) and then the ensuing disappointment when you realise that even these days, this is the reality for women.

This book hurts to read, and holy sh*t does it make you feel uncomfortable, but at the same time you’ll be cheering on Kitty and her bloody mission, because at the end of the day, there’s that rageful kernel inside of you that can say nothing and just claps along instead.

I feel unsettled, uplifted and pleasantly conflicted at the end of this. But I can’t say there’s anything I would change in this book. It’s sure as hell going to sit with me for a long time to come.
