A Storm of Swords is such a step-up in wow-factor from book two. And this is only part one – I can’t wait to read part two.

The stage has well and truly been set by this point in the story, and it feels like Martin has fully unleashed the chaos, with battles being held left, right and centre – and characters meeting unexpected fates nearly every chapter. I’m really curious to know what will be in part two, as each and every story is left in a precarious situation.

My favourite thing about book 3, part one is the shock factor. There is a good reason that Martin’s series has become so popular and the author lauded as such a great writer. This ain’t just a popular fad, it’s damn good writing. It’s impossible to guess at what turn things will take next, and it’s positively thrilling how brutally unexpected the twists are. You might think that a character is on one journey, but what Martin has in store for them can really turn things on their head.

Without giving any spoilers away, my favourite twisty parts were Daenerys’ final chapter at the slavers, Jamie’s whole story, and Lord Beric Dondarrion – that last one had me rereading the particular chapter when exciting things happen, with me scratching my head trying to work out if I had understood everything correctly.

Absolutely loving this series and still highly recommend it as a more-than-worthy read. If you’re like me, and not keen on watching the series because of the violence being a bit too much, I can say that it’s 100% more palatable as a book.

Winter approaches Westeros like an angry beast.

The Seven Kingdoms are divided by revolt and blood feud. In the northern wastes, a horde of hungry, savage people steeped in the dark magic of the wilderness is poised to invade the Kingdom of the North where Robb Stark wears his new-forged crown. And Robb’s defences are ranged against the South, the land of the cunning and cruel Lannisters, who have his young sisters in their power.

Throughout Westeros, the war for the Iron Throne rages more fiercely than ever, but if the wall is breached, no king will live to claim it.
