Mug Collecting and Other Things

Okay so this isn’t strictly bookish so I must apologise for disappointing you. However, I do think that something about mug collecting is bookish – although looking at mine you’ll detect strong vides of Disney and Doctor Who . . . I’m working on it. In fact! Next time I go mug shopping (very serious business) I’m planning on raiding from THIS store (you’re welcome) at Society6 (an awesome website, if I may say so) to buy some specifically book related mugs. Yup. I’m that cool.

But anyway, everyone loves geeky stuff . . . right? Well I do. I love mugs and other shenanigans that are individual and geeky so much (but not more than books, of course). In fact, I find mug-buying somewhat extraordinarily exciting and I thought you might just enjoy looking at my little collection as much as I do.

Now because we all have short attention spans, I’m only going to post about my mugs . . . today. However, if you would like to see all my other paraphernalia (namely, Doctor Whom merchandise, etc) then I’m more than happy to do a bit of show and tell on that too. If I’m being honest, I’ll probably just do it anyway. Try and stop me, *runs into the sunset*. Do let me know if you’re really eager to look at my Dalek salt and pepper set and my bike clock anyway, because, you know, they’re pretty cool.

And now! Let the tour begin! Who’s excited?!

 My Alarming Mug Collection

I have a soft spot for mugs, I really do. If I ever go on holidays then I always, always come back with a mug to remember that place by. It would have been a lot more convenient to collect keyrings but hey, mugs are cooler. Plus key rings are mostly useless when it comes to drinking tea . . . unless you clip them on to the handle . . . or something strange like that (I don’t do that, FYI). Most of these have a little story behind them but some are just frivolous buys, what can I say.

Doctor Who Mug

This mug was given to me as a birthday present from my work colleagues on my 19th. I loove it – it’s so spacey and old school. Whenever I watch Doctor Who this is the mug in which my tea is sipped from (as one cannot watch Doctor Who sans tea, tsk tsk).

Parisian Mug

This mug I bought at the top of the Eiffel Tower. My family and I went to Paris a few years back and despite my parents telling me I really didn’t need a mug I am eternally delighted that I bought it. I have no idea if it’s unique but hey, cool story, right?

Lion King Mug

FullSizeRender (17)

In December 2015 my family and I went to see The Lion King (because it came to Perth, what even). I walked past several over priced merchandise stores with my parents promptly pushing me along because why would anyone want a cool, awesomely tall Lion King mug? Pah. I ended up running back to a stall to purchase one. I approve of my life decisions.

 Marauders Map Mug

Everyone needs a bit of Harry Potter in their life, continuously. So I bought this from RedBubble when they had a little sale. I flourish it whenever I drink from it to ensure any on-lookers are appropriately jealous.

Peter Pan Mug

I just really like Disney, okay? I bought this from Redbubble too and it says, “Second star to the right and straight on till morning”, with Peter Pan’s shadow on it too. I feel so Disnerific when I drink from this one.

Books and Money Mug

FullSizeRender (5)

I bought this one from Redbubble because it 100% sums up my life. It says, “So many books so little time money”. Excellent choice, Kirstie, excellent choice.

Las Vegas Starbucks Mug

FullSizeRender (6)

I went to America many moons ago back when I was doing gymnastics (oh, I’m an ex-gymnast if you didn’t know). Starbucks does nae exist in Western Australia (#ForeverIsolated) so of course we went screaming around and jumping on every store we saw. I don’t actually like Starbucks that much, but it sure was exciting. Krispy Kreme came to WA in the last year or so and that got a huge reaction, imagine if Starbucks came. Gee whiz. I’m probably the only person who bought their mug because I got a real funny look. But it’s so big. And from Vegas, so pretty cool too.

Chocolat Mug

FullSizeRender (7)

I bought this mug in the French Alps (just a bit fancy). My family and I went skiing in the three valleys and where we were staying there was this quaint little trinket shop so I had to buy something, of course. This is a bit dainty however, and got chipped. Sad face.

Skiing Egg Cup

FullSizeRender (8)

Same story here as for the Chocolat mug – it’s from the same shop and it’s an egg cup, ON SKIS. I can’t even.

Mickey Mouse Mug

FullSizeRender (9)

I bought this in America whilst I was there too. We (of course) went to Disney Land LA and I, of course, bought a mug. My only wish is that I should’ve bought more. Oh well, guess I’ll just have to go back. I’ve ‘retired’ this to my bookshelf because it’s got a crack in it (not my fault) and I don’t want it to fall apart.

Olaf Mug

Despite my scoffing about the over-hypedness of Disney’s Frozen, I still bought a mug. When I was in Italy in 2015 there was a DISNEY STORE. I swear all the cool things in life just avoid WA, sigh. I went to town on that store, I did.

Eva Mug

FullSizeRender (11)

This also came from the Italian Disney Store that I found and was a very last minute buy. I wasn’t sure I had the luggage allowance to bring it home but I didn’t care. Obviously I managed to do some serious suitcase tetris and got it home.

Geronimo Mug

FullSizeRender (14)

This mug is also from Redbubble and is a Doctor Who reference relating to the 11th Doctor’s catch phrase. Although David Tenant is hands down my favourite doctor, this design is just so darn pretty.

Duomo Mug

FullSizeRender (18)

This mug I bought when I was in Milan. For those of you that don’t know there’s a huge cathedral (the Duomo) that’s in the heart of Milan. It’s absolutely magnificent so after a bit of hunting around I managed to find this 3D Duomo mug (it says “Milano” on the back).

TARDIS Tea Set

FullSizeRender (20)

I don’t remember where I got this from but it’s amazing. It’s a tea pot and mug set that looks like the TARDIS. Although a little tricky to drink from because of the square shape. Nonetheless, it’s mighty cool.

Wasn’t that exciting? I don’t think I will ever stop collecting mugs. They’re just so much fun to drink tea out of and ponder the mysteries of life. Or perhaps that’s just me.

Do you collect mugs? I’d love to know if you do and I’d love even more to gaze at pictures of them. Let me know in the comments below!

Don’t forget to also let me know down below whether you want to see another post like this featuring my geeky ornaments that gather dust around my room! I promise I’ll be back tomorrow with some strictly bookish posts for you, cross my heart.

End Note

  1. I love mugs too. You have a beautiful collection there. Varied beautiful collection is more like it. I have shifted to teacups now. Having an increasing attraction to floral teacups in pastel shades. Too bad they dont sell it as a single piece. Buying six at on go is so not worth it

    1. Thank you 🙂 I know what you mean with tea cup sets! I love having a look around T2 (if you’re not familiar with the shop have a Google) and they sell some beautiful tea pots and cups. You can definitely buy the tea pot separate and I’m pretty sure it’s the same with the cups.
